PowerLines Launches Jobs Board Connecting Energy Professionals and Public Utilities Commissions

As state regulators tackle increasingly complex energy challenges, PowerLines is building a talent pipeline of energy professionals.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, PowerLines is launching a Public Utilities Commission jobs board created to connect public interest-minded energy professionals to opportunities at state public utilities commissions (PUCs). Through the PUC jobs board, PowerLines aims to raise awareness and highlight the array of opportunities at state energy regulatory offices.

With the pace of change in the energy industry increasing dramatically, the need for talented engineers, economists, lawyers, accountants, and other professionals to help tackle pressing challenges is also growing. PowerLines’ PUC jobs board is dynamically updated with the latest postings and features open roles across all 50 states. This jobs board is intended to serve as a resource for energy professionals contemplating their next professional move.

Across the U.S., PUCs regulate the investor-owned utilities that provide electricity, gas, water, and telecommunications services. Approximately 200 PUC commissioners are responsible for more than $200 billion in utility spending each year. PUCs are responsible for ensuring that consumers can access affordable and reliable energy, balancing the priorities of economic development and consumer protection. With 80 million Americans struggling to pay their utility bills, and 4 in 5 Americans feeling powerless over these costs, PUCs will play an outsized role in the energy system moving forward.

“Now is the most exciting time to work in the energy system. PUC decisions made over the next five years will shape the future of our energy system. PowerLines encourages energy professionals committed to advancing the public interest  to explore opportunities at these critically important agencies,” said Charles Hua, Founder and Executive Director of PowerLines. “PowerLines stands ready to support PUCs by building a talent pipeline of motivated energy professionals.“

In a Utility Dive opinion piece: Thousands of energy experts are leaving federal government. Here’s where they should go, Charles Hua, former New Jersey Board of Public Utilities General Counsel Abe Silverman, and former Chair of the Arkansas Public Service Commission Ted Thomas urge energy professionals departing the federal government to explore opportunities at PUCs.

“As the electric sector modernizes our aging grid, state public utilities commissions are under enormous pressure to keep our power system affordable and reliable,” said Abe Silverman, former New Jersey Board of Public Utilities General Counsel. “Access to energy professionals who bring experience and a fresh perspective will be invaluable. Highly-skilled workers with relevant expertise are rare, and state agencies desperately need them.”

On May 28, 2025, PowerLines will host a webinar for jobseekers, featuring current and former PUC commissioners, staffers, and other experts, sharing insights on what PUCs do and why they matter, the types of roles available and skillsets needed, and how to apply for open roles and grow a meaningful career at a PUC.

“For any of the energy professionals on the job market, if you want to make a difference for the lives of consumers, you should consider working for a state utility regulator,” said Ted Thomas, former Chair of the Arkansas Public Service Commission “As Chair of the Arkansas Public Service Commission, I sought to ensure that Arkansas consumers reaped the economic benefits of innovative technologies. There is no higher calling than serving the public.”
